Temporal Knowledge and Musical Perception: Application to Auditive Illusions

چکیده

This paper proposes some clues for a formal framework for representing and manipulating knowledge about musical perception. Our purpose is to set up a perception model that will enable us to simulate the behaviour of an agent in listening situation. It will lead to produce an “intelligent” representation of a piece of music. We apply ourselves here to characterize intervention of Time in the musical perception in initiating a formal comparison between several models. Reasoning within a classical time logic supposes to take a priori time as a cause to describe the nature of knowledge. Our approach consists in supposing that the structure of knowledge a posteriori informs time; thus the nature of time is a consequence of the interpretation of events. This means we have to distinguish Universal Time from a bunchof Musical Times. We focus on some auditives illusions for their capacity to show particular properties of Musical Time.

The effect of musical aptitude on the integration of audiovisual speech and non-speech signals in children

Multisensory integration was assessed using two audiovisual illusions. In the McGurk effect, auditory speech perception is altered by incongruent visual speech. In the Shams illusion, the number of seen flashes is altered by an incongruent number of heard beeps. The illusions were tested in 10-year-old children, whose musical aptitude was also assessed. The strength of the McGurk effect was not...

Influence of Rhythmic Grouping on Duration Perception: A Novel Auditory Illusion

This study investigated a potential auditory illusion in duration perception induced by rhythmic temporal contexts. Listeners with or without musical training performed a duration discrimination task for a silent period in a rhythmic auditory sequence. The critical temporal interval was presented either within a perceptual group or between two perceptual groups. We report the just-noticeable di...

Language, Music, and Brain

Introduction: Over the last centuries, scientists have been trying to figure out how the brain is learning the language. By 1980, the study of brain-language relationships was based on the study of human brain damage. But since 1980, neuroscience methods have greatly improved. There is controversy about where music, composition, or the perception of language and music are in the brain, or wheth...

Relationship between Intelligence Quotient and Musical Ability in Children with Cochlear Implantation

Introduction: Children with cochlear implants (CIs) may experience few opportunities for positive musical experiences, and musical perception is therefore often not sufficiently developed. This paper investigates and discusses the relationship between intelligence quotient (IQ) and musical ability in children with CIs compared with children with normal hearing.                                  ...
